Michael Kocan
General Partner
Michael is Outbound Capital’s Managing Partner and leverages his prior experience in management consulting to identifying business problems and electrical engineering / technical management to help guide their solutions. He leads the identification, analysis and ongoing support of Outbound’s portfolio of startup companies. He invests in startups with strong founding teams solving large, complicated and important business and societal problems.
Trained as an engineer and analytical problem solver, Michael previously led management consulting engagements for global Fortune 100 financial services, consumer products, energy and international development clients. Prior to consulting, Michael was an electrical engineer and product manager at the United States Department of Defense, where he managed multimillion-dollar product development efforts.
He resides in Saratoga Springs, NY with his wife, Abbey, and two young children. Michael earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Bucknell University, and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School.
Abbey Kocan
Partner (Part-Time)
Abbey is a Partner at Outbound Capital Management, leveraging her experience with strategy development, governance, partnership development, organization design and talent strategies to serve as a strategic advisor and to support analysis of portfolio companies.
With over 15 years in the for-profit and non-profit sectors, Abbey’s experience also includes project management, change management, communications, and resource mobilization in the non-profit sector. She is a senior advisor for partnership development at the Bay Area Global Health Alliance, and previously served as the Executive Director of Kupona Foundation, which improves access to high quality healthcare in Tanzania. At Kupona, Abbey rebuilt the start-up 501(c)(3) to position it for greater growth and impact, diversified funding streams, served as a strategic advisor to the CEO of Kupona’s partner in Tanzania, and mobilized technical and advisory resources to support their mission. Prior to Kupona, Abbey was a Manager in Deloitte Consulting’s Human Capital practice, where she led and supported consulting engagements for global Fortune 100 financial services and insurance and pharmaceutical clients.
Abbey resides in Saratoga Springs, NY with her husband, Mike, and two young children. She earned an M.B.A. from Goizueta Business School at Emory University and a B.A. in Sociology and Spanish from Bucknell University, where she was also a Division I athlete.
